AOKs: History, Ethics, Human Sciences, Natural Sciences
Real Life Situation
Communal bathhouses were once very common in Granada as most people didn't have washing facilities in their homes. This reconstruction of a traditional bathhouse however is visited mostly by tourists rather than people who are wishing to clean themselves. This bathhouse is mixed gender and does not allow nudity, unlike traditional Arab styled bathhouses. Massages are also offered as part of the full experience.
This attraction is not free and requires a reservation. It is expensive but is a very luxurious experience.
First Order Questions:
Are there any health benefits to full body immersion in warm water?
Could it be more economical (water and fuel usage) to have communal washing facilities in residential areas?
When did the tradition of communal bathhouses start to fade in Granada and why?
Second Order Questions:
Despite all hotel rooms having bath and/or shower facilities, tourists still pay money to use these baths. Why?
What psychological changes are associated with 'cleansing'?
Can the mind be cleaned as the body can?
Why is public nudity often associated with shame or embarrassment in many cultures?
